Cultivate your own floral brushes.

Flowers can brighten up almost any scene, and one of the best ways to add flowers to a Photoshop project is with a flower brush. Brush effects can replicate a wide variety of looks, from photorealistic effects to decorative graphic design.

While there are no specific floral brushes built into Photoshop, there are still plenty of ways to get your flower fix. Like real flowers, floral Photoshop brushes have to be grown, cultivated, or picked before you add them to your graphic arrangement.

Create your own brushes.

The most simple Photoshop brushes work just like a marker or a paintbrush. But you can also turn any image into a customized digital brush tip. Create one from a photo of a flower, and then you can paint ornate floral patterns, wreaths, and more.

Change the flower, change the mood.

Choose your flower carefully. Each different flower adds its own unique feeling to a project. Blooms like lilies, dandelions, and marigolds add brightness and light, bluebells and violets are contemplative, and roses add a dash of romance.

Create your own Photoshop flower brushes from scratch.

You can create floral Photoshop brushes, or any other kind of brush, in a few simple steps.

  • Draw it:
Use the existing Brush tool to draw or paint a flower shape, or import a flower image into Photoshop.
  • Define it:
Go to the Edit menu and select Define Brush Preset.
  • Name it:
Give your new floral brush a name.
  • Adjust it:
Go to the Tool Options bar, open the Brush Settings panel, and set variables like spacing, size, and angles to your liking.

Best practices for creating brushes.

  • Save Photoshop brushes as ABR files. This file extension exists specifically for Photoshop brushes, holding information about their shape and texture and storing them by default in a usable location.
  • When you save brushes, bear in mind that it’s much easier to scale them down than scale them up. When you scale up a small image, you’ll often get pixelation and distortion. When you scale down a large image, you’ll have fewer issues. Err on saving images on the larger side.
  • Find brushes that you’ve made or downloaded by going to Window › Brushes.
  • Download hundreds of high-quality floral images to use as the basis for your brushes from Adobe Stock.
  • Click the hamburger menu in Photoshop and select Get More Brushes to explore new free Photoshop brushes that the Adobe community has created.
  • Find your newly installed brushes in the Brushes panel.
