MTS files.
MTS files may not be as common as other video file types, like MP4 or MOV. However, they’re an invaluable tool if you’re looking to use and store high-definition video. Find everything you need to know about MTS files, from their history to how to open, compress, and create them.

What is an MTS file?
An MTS file, or MPEG Transport Stream file, is a compressed high-definition video extension, often saved in Advanced Video Coding High Definition (AVCHD) format. MTS files are generally found in most high-definition video technology, such as Blu-ray discs.
MTS files are compatible with most operating systems that can play high-definition video. For example, Macs, PCs, and Linux platforms can all open MTS files with VideoLAN VLC.
Once converted, they’re also compatible with pro video editing software. The file extension uses MPEG-4/H.264 video compression to make files more manageable and supports 1080i and 720p video.
History of the MTS file.
In 2006, Sony and Panasonic brought the MTS file extension to life for use on their HD camcorders as part of the AVCHD (Advanced Coding High-Definition Video) format.
Both formats are still in popular use today, with their primary applications being to shoot and store high-definition video and audio files for movies, television, and similar platforms. And alongside the mass adoption of the AVCHD format, many also use MTS files to shoot personal videos.
How to use MTS files.
MTS files are primarily used for high-definition video. Here are some of the ways in which they’re perfect for video projects.
Watching movies and TV shows.
AVCHD and MTS file extensions were originally shot and stored on HD Sony and Panasonic camcorders, which are commonly used within the media industry to shoot films and television. MTS files are then transferred onto Blu-ray discs so they display high-definition media at home.
Shooting high-definition video.
If you’re a movie maker who uses supported video cameras, you’ll likely work with AVCHD and MTS file extensions when shooting. As they’re capable of shooting in 720p and use MPEG-4 video compression, it allows filmmakers to capture and store a high volume of film, while also retaining high quality.
Video editing.
MTS files are editable across a variety of video editing applications. They’re compatible with most Mac and Windows computers after conversion and are modified using video editing software, such as Adobe Premiere Pro.
Pros and cons of MTS files.
MTS files have some great uses for footage captured on camcorder, though they may not be the right format for everyone.
Pros.
- High definition. MTS files run on AVCHD, which supports 1080i and 720p video. This means you get to enjoy compressed, high-definition video and audio on most devices and platforms.
- Supported by most players. It used to be the case that MTS files could only be opened by specific media players, due to their high-def, “heavy” nature. Now, MTS is compatible with almost all media players, thanks to MPEG-4 compression.
- Easily converted. If you’re not able to access or edit MTS files in their original form, they can be easily converted into other file types, such as MP4, MOV, and MPG, using third-party software.
Cons.
- Large file size. A disadvantage of storing such high-quality video is the size of the file extension itself. For example, just a 30-second video amounts to just under 80MB.
- Not compatible with all media players. Some media player platforms are incompatible with MTS files. If this is the case, you’ll need to convert your MTS files into a more manageable format, such as MP4.

How to open an MTS file.
There are a variety of platforms you can use to open and play MTS file extensions. Here are a few examples of how you open MTS videos on some of the more common ones.
Windows Media Player (Windows)
If you have a Windows computer, Windows Media Player (WMP) should already be on your desktop.
All you need to do is:
- Navigate to your MTS file
- Right click
- Select “Open”
- Click on the button prompt next to “Select a program from a list of installed programs”
- Select “Windows Media Player”
- If you want Windows Media Player to be your default whenever you open MTS files, click “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.”
Eltima Elmedia Player (Mac)
Apple’s QuickTime, the default media player on Mac, is not capable of opening MTS files. So, you’ll have to download extra software to do so. One of the most popular examples is the Elmedia Player.
To open your MTS files using this software, you need to:
- Download Eltima Elmedia Player
- Open up Elmedia Player
- Open up File Explorer and navigate to your MTS files
- Drag your chosen video file into the Elmedia Player window
- Alternatively, simply right-click your MTS file, click “Open with,”, then choose Elmedia Player.
VideoLAN VLC Media Player (cross-platform)
VLC is a cross-platform downloadable media player that’s compatible with the majority of operating systems, including Windows and iOS.
To open MTS files with VLC, simply:
- Download the VLC software.
- Open up VLC.
- In the top left, select “Media.”
- From the dropdown, click “Open file.”
- Navigate to your MTS file and choose the one you want to play.
Depending on where MTS files are accessed, the file extension may appear slightly differently. For example, MTS files accessed from a camcorder will appear as .MTS, while similar files on a Blu-ray may appear as .M2TS.
How to create and edit an MTS file.
You can edit your MTS files using Adobe Premiere, but first, you’ll have to convert them to a Premiere file format. You’ll need to download additional conversion software to do this but, once that’s done, the process itself is simple.
All you need to do is choose the type of file you want to convert your MTS extension into – for example, MP4, MOV, or related file types. Then, once you’ve got your compatible file, simply open up Adobe Premiere Pro and start a new project. After that, all you need to do is click “File” then “Import” and choose the videos you want to edit.
