The UK’s most colourful cities
Summary/Overview
From diverse street art to extravagant murals and multicoloured exteriors, the UK is filled with colourful landscapes, but which city is the most colourful? We decided to rank the UK’s most colourful cities.
To do so we looked at four different factors. These included the Google search volume for ‘X street art’ and ‘X colour (where X is each location), Instagram hashtags such as #Xstreetart and #streetartX, the total social media mentions for X and colour/colourful, and finally the total number of images on user-generated content for ‘X colourful streets’.
Once the data was collected for each place, the factors were then normalised and given a score between 0 and 1. These normalised values were then summed and multiplied by 4 to give each location a score out of 100. And, the higher the score, the more colourful the location!
So, without further ado, let’s dive into whereabouts in the UK you’ll find the most colour.

Methodology.
This dataset contains rankings looking at the most colourful locations in the UK. To do this different factors were used. Once the data for the factors was collected, the factors were then normalised, to provide each factor with a score between 0 and 1.
If data was not available, a score of 0 was given. The normalised values were then summed and multiplied by 4 (UK), to give each location a total score out of 100. The locations were then ranked from highest to lowest, based on their total scores.
The factors used are as follows:
- Google Search Volume - The combined worldwide Google search volume for "X street art" and "X colour", where X is each location, between April 2023 and March 2024.
- Instagram Hashtags - The combined number of results for the hashtags "#Xstreetart" and "#streetartX" on Instagram, where X is each location.
- Social Media Mentions - The total social media mentions for "X AND (colour OR colourful)" between 01/04/2023 and 31/03/2024, as listed on Brandwatch.
- User-generated images - The total user-generated images for "X colourful streets", where X is each location.
The factors were indexed as follows:
- Google Search Volume - High values get a high score. Low values get a low score.
- Instagram Hashtags - High values get a high score. Low values get a low score.
- Social Media Mentions - High values get a high score. Low values get a low score.
- User generated Images - High values get a high score. Low values get a low score.
All data is correct as of 18/04/24. The ranking data shown is a compilation of multiple data sources and may not be representative of real life. All data is accurate with regard to the sources provided.
