Since 1975, paper belonging to the A series has been standardised according to ISO 216 which was created to conserve the proportions between the width and height of these formats. This correlation was first described by German scientist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg in 1786. It wasn’t until 1922 that the aspect ratio √2 was taken up by Walter Porstmann and the German DIN 476.
