Tip: Edit a group of layers with an adjustment layer

Apply an adjustment layer to multiple layers in a group.

What you learned

Adjust multiple layers

An adjustment layer affects all the layers below it in the Layers panel by default. What if you want to limit the effect of an adjustment layer to a particular set of multiple layers? You can do that using a layer group and a layer Blend mode in Photoshop.

Create a group of layers

Create a group in the Layers panel that contains multiple layers you want to adjust. With the Group layer selected, create an adjustment layer, which will be located inside the group. By default, this adjustment layer affects all the layers below it, whether or not they are in the layer group. So if there is a Background layer below the layer group, it will be impacted too.

Apply a Blend mode to the group

To limit the effect of the adjustment layer to only the layers in the group, select the Group layer and go to the Blend mode menu in the Layers panel. Change the Blend mode from Pass through to Normal. Now only the layers in the group are impacted by the adjustment layer.
