Photoshop on the web beta offers several ways to make selections, including automated features such as Select Subject and Remove Background. Selections are an ideal way to apply edits to a certain area of the image. You can also turn a selection into a layer mask, which lets you combine different images by controlling what is visible on a layer.
Create a selection with the Magic Wand tool, and add a layer mask
The Magic Wand tool creates a selection by sampling the area you click and including adjacent areas of similar color and brightness.
Choose Magic Wand from the Selection tools menu in the toolbar.
Click the area you want to select.
To add to or subtract from the selection, use the icons on the left side of the options bar above the image.
In the control bar that appears under the selection, click the Create mask from selection icon to add a layer mask that reveals the selected areas and hides the unselected areas.
Create a layer mask with Select Subject
For many photos, the Select Subject command can automatically detect and select the main subject in the image.
Make sure that the layer that contains the subject is active in the Layers panel.
Choose Select Subject from the Selection tools menu in the toolbar.
In the control bar that appears under the selection, click the Create mask from selection icon to add a layer mask that shows the subject and reveals the layers below.
Automatically remove a background
For many photos, the Remove Background command can automatically detect and create a layer mask that hides that part of the image.
Make sure that the layer that contains the background is active in the Layers panel.
Choose Remove Background from the Selection tools menu in the toolbar.
Create a selection with the Quick Selection tool
The Quick Selection tool lets you create selections by dragging across the areas you want to select. Additional brush strokes add to the selection.
Choose Quick selection from the Selection tools menu in the toolbar.
Drag across the area that you want to select.
Brush again to add to the selection.
If you select too much, click the Subtract from selection icon in the options bar and drag across the areas that you want to deselect.
