Three ways to vectorise text in Illustrator.
Here are three methods to vectorise text in Illustrator: converting standard text to outlines, transforming brush-created text into shapes and tracing handwritten text. Use any of these methods to edit your text as vector shapes for versatile design use.
- Convert Text to Outlines
Converting text to outlines turns the text characters into vector shapes.
Step 1: Before converting, duplicate the text since you won't be able to change the character style or font afterward.
Step 2: Highlight the text you want to vectorise, then choose Create Outlines from the Type menu.
Once outlined, the text becomes a shape with anchor points, editable with the Direct Selection tool. - Vectorise Text Created by Brushes
This process removes overlapping outlines and finalises the vectorised text.
Step 1: Highlight the text created using brushes.
Step 2: Go to Object > Path > Outline Stroke.
Step 3: Select the outlines and choose the Shape Builder tool from the toolbar. Draw through the overlapping areas to combine the shapes. - Vectorise Handwritten Text
This method allows you to create customised fonts from your handwriting, though additional font design tools are needed to finalise the font.
Step 1: Scan or photograph your handwriting, making sure the outlines are clear.
Step 2: Import the scanned image into Adobe Illustrator.
Step 3: Use the Pen tool from the toolbar to trace each letter individually.
TIP: If you're unfamiliar with the Pen tool, refer to this tutorial page for detailed instructions.
Step 4: Once tracing is complete, create closed paths, use the Shape Builder to combine overlapping areas and add a fill colour.
