Preserve and share your work in different formats.

What you’ll learn

Save vs. Save as

The Save command (and its shortcut Cmd+S on Mac or Ctrl+S on Win) writes over the last version of a file without warning. To preserve the last version, use the Save as command instead and change the name or location of the new version.

Save as PSD

The PSD format preserves layers and other Photoshop features. Use this format to retain a fully editable file with its layers intact.

Save a copy as JPEG

A PSD file can’t be used online. So if you need an image to post online, make a copy in a web-friendly format like JPEG, using the Save a Copy command. Unlike a PSD file, a JPEG does not have separate layers.
