Spice up your project with fun lettering

Design fun lettering for your projects! In the first tutorial of the series, you'll format text, convert it to shapes, then edit those shapes.

Start with core concepts

This video introduces the concept of lettering by formatting text, then converting it to shapes using the Create Outlines command, and finally reshaping the letters.

What you'll learn

Explore alternate letters

Add letter variants—called glyphs—to your text to try a different look for your lettering.

Get creative with discretionary ligatures

Apply discretionary ligatures, hidden typographic gems that can add a fun and unexpected look to your lettering.

Refine your text formatting

With fonts, alternate letters, and discretionary ligatures applied, fine-tune the appearance of your text.

Convert text to shapes

Using the Create Outlines command, turn text into editable shapes that you can modify.

Edit individual letter shapes

Once text is converted to outlines, use selection and drawing tools like the Direct Selection tool to transform lettering in any number of creative ways.
