Instagram broadcast channels are a type of group chat that allows creators to share content via DMs with a large audience – without losing control to a wave of responses and commentary. You see, broadcast channels are for broadcasting updates as opposed to a traditional group chat or community that allows for more back-and-forth discourse between admins and members. While members of a broadcast channel can react, respond to polls, and reply in threaded comments, broadcast channels will keep your content front and center while allowing you to reach your audience directly through DMs.

The benefits of Instagram broadcast channels

Instagram broadcast channels allow creators and influencers to have a more direct line of communication with their audience – allowing them to share exclusive content directly into their audience’s inboxes, without competing for attention in the feed. Not only that – but a notification will alert your broadcast channel members to any new content shared (unless members have chosen to disable notifications), giving you an even better chance at getting your content acknowledged and seen by your audience members. As a way to share more intimate and behind-the-scenes content and messages with your audience, broadcast channels are wonderful spaces for you to connect more deeply with your audience and strengthen the bond with your community.

  • Send the first message to the channel: This will automatically send a notification to all of your Instagram followers and invite them to join the channel.
  • Share an invitation link: Some users have the ability to share invitation links that can be shared with their audience and added to Instagram bios.
  • Share the channel on your Stories: Creators and broadcast channel admins can share the channel directly on their Stories to gain more attention.
  • Share messages from the channel to your Story: Similarly, messages from the broadcast channel can also be shared on Stories by tapping and holding a message from the channel and then selecting to “Share to story”. How to use an Instagram broadcast channel

Content for subscribers

Instagram broadcast channels can be created for subscribers only – meaning that broadcast channels can be used as another route to provide paying subscribers with more exclusive content from your channel – as well as give them exclusive updates via DMs with information such as discount codes, early access links to product releases, or updates on when particular items will be back in stock.

Promote other content and channels

Because Instagram broadcast channels provide a direct line to your audience, they can be a great space to notify your audience when new content has dropped on Instagram or on other channels such as YouTube or your blog. Use broadcast channels to announce your new content and encourage them to visit your other channels and engage with your new content.

Create multiple channels for different purposes

Sometimes, it is the spaces where niche communities gather that produce the best engagement. As a result, it might be worth creating several different Instagram broadcast channels for separate purposes or around particular topics. This will allow your audience to pick and choose the type of content they wish to receive DMs from you about. This will mean that your audience will be more engaged when broadcast channel content hits their inbox.

Share snippets from your day

Because broadcast channels allow you to connect with your audience away from the feed, it’s easier to share more unfiltered and personal content on the fly giving your audience more opportunity to connect with you and view you as the human that you are. Broadcast channels are also great to keep your audience updated during days when specific events or activities are taking place to keep your audience in the loop and make them feel as if they are a part of the action.

Share polls and question cards

While polls and question cards are great for stirring engagement and conversation, they can also serve a practical purpose by being used to collect real feedback about your products or services, or your content in general.

Share voice notes

Voice notes can be a great way to build connection with your audience – by allowing them to hear from you directly and authentically in the moment. Don’t be afraid to drop the occasional voice note in your broadcast channel for a dose of more personable and relatable content.

Go live

That’s right – you can live stream directly to your Instagram broadcast channel providing an exclusive live stream for channel members only. Not only is going live a great way to make your channel members feel special and valued, but it’s a wonderful way to engage with your audience in real time – away from the unfiltered audience of your feed.

Start a Spotlight

Spotlights allow members of your channel to submit photos to a prompt you have shared. You can even offer prizes for your favorite entries to further incentivize engagement and give back to your community.

Invite collaborators

You can give another account access to your broadcast channel by inviting them to join as a collaborator. This way, you can allow others to join you in providing content to your channel for a temporary or indefinite period of time allowing you to mix things up with some fresh content from another source, as well as grow your channel with the potential of new joiners from your collaborator’s usual audience.

While broadcast channels remain publicly accessible and the content viewable to non-members, they can still be a wonderful space for checking in with a smaller and more engaged community. With perks such as undivided attention from your audience away from the feed, and the ability to share content via DMs while keeping your messages in focus, broadcast channels are one of Instagram’s newer features that come with many benefits for creators and businesses alike.
