Four prompts to chat with your PDF more effectively.

Acrobat AI Assistant allows you to chat with a PDF to generate summaries, identify key takeaways, and even create outputs based on the content. Here are four tips to maximize your AI prompt efficiency.

Artificial intelligence software runs on prompts. You tell it what you want, and it does it. But just like communicating with humans, you should communicate clearly and effectively when you chat with a PDF using AI Assistant.

Be as specific as possible.

AI is smart, but it can’t read your mind. You need to tell it exactly what you want. And the more generic your prompt, the more generic the answer. That’s why it’s important to make your prompts as specific as possible when you chat with a PDF.

For example, imagine you uploaded your planned social media calendar for the month and want AI Assistant to help you generate new content ideas. You could write the prompt, “What are some additional content ideas for social media?” However, that prompt will create a wide range of ideas that may or may not be what you want.

Instead, you should make your prompt more specific, like this: “Provide 30 additional content ideas for Instagram with the goal of generating new followers.” Giving the AI specific instructions with definitive quantities and goals helps ensure you get exactly what you want without as much back-and-forth.

Act as a…

AI tools are actually pretty good actors. Adding a “role” to your prompts is another great way to guide the AI to give you better answers.

As you chat with a PDF, ask the tool to act as a type of person, object, or process to generate tailored responses. For example, your prompt might look like, “Act as a project manager and identify the key takeaways of these meeting notes. Please provide action items for the team broken out by person.”

The output will focus on providing a meeting notes recap similar to how a project manager would rather than provide generic information you might get otherwise.

Consider the output.

Speaking of output, be sure to chat with your PDF about how you want the information presented. Do you want it as a bulleted list? Perhaps you need to send the document overview in an email or export it to a spreadsheet. Or maybe you need to add some new lines of code to your website.

AI tools can format the output in a way that best suits your needs. For example, you could create the prompt, “Provide a summary of the information in the form of an email that will be read by the executive team.” The tool will then format the output as a ready-to-paste email, complete with professional verbiage. After a quick proofread, you can simply copy and paste the output into a new email, populate your recipients, and hit send.

Use suggested prompts.

Once you upload a new document, AI Assistant will scan the entire document to understand the content and provide a general overview of the information. It’ll also include a list of suggested questions about the document. If you’re unsure what prompt to use next, just click on one of the questions.

Using the suggested prompts is a quick and easy way to chat with a PDF and identify some of the key takeaways of any document.
